Chapter Nine

Silence for a moment as the three Valdor looked at him, combinations of shock, puzzlement and surprise chasing across their features. And then the male called Llai spoke, almost as if he could not stop himself, and the moment he did Nick’s heart sank all the way to his toes. “A human cannot be our mate! Impossible!”

“Llai!”

That rebuke came from Thorn, and to Nick’s intense relief he moved himself away from the three other Valdor and placed his arm around Nick’s suddenly trembling shoulders. Because Nick had not expected this! Not at all. He had thought that the moment he said the words the Valdor would all pull him into their circle, and they would be kissing him, and stroking him, and the jealousy and the isolation he had felt would evaporate.

But they hadn’t.

They weren’t.

They looked confused, shocked…and displeased.

At that realization Nick couldn’t help but draw in an unsteady, unhappy breath, and he leaned into Thorn, both relieved and pleased to have his mate back by his side, to be able to draw strength from his calm, comforting presence. The moment Llai saw this, saw both his and Thorn’s reaction to one another, his eyes narrowed and he took a step back.

“He cannot!”

“He is,” Thorn said, his voice as calm and steady as always. “I have already claimed him.”

“But…” Llai shook his head, and as he did so, Nick couldn’t help but notice that there was a blob of orange paint in his hair. It matched the color of his eyes almost perfectly. “That is impossible.”

“Why?” Thorn asked. “You must know that many Valdor have found their mates among the humans. Not to mention other species. Why is this such a shock to you?”

Llai shook his head again. The blob of orange paint seemed to quiver. “I know of the humans,” he said. “I have met one. His name is Jaeger. His mates are very happy with him. But us?” He waved a hand around them. “I never thought that would be the case with us.”

“Why?” Thorn asked.

But Llai did not answer, he seemed almost lost for words, shaking his head and looking almost angry. It was then that one of the other Valdor stepped forward, the one who had introduced himself as Karle.

“Llai did not know if we would ever find our other mate,” he said.

“Mates,” Thorn corrected.

Karle seemed to wave the word away. “Because we cannot hear the call we knew we simply had to wait for them to find us, and so a human never would.”

“Humans can hear the call too,” Nick said, unable to remain silent any longer.

All four Valdor turned to look at him. Nick shifted uncomfortably.

“Those are just rumors,” Karle said.

“No,” Nick replied. “They’re not. My friend Ryan heard the call of his mate Zayne. He rescued him from an ice planet. Had he not done so, Zayne would have frozen to death.”

“Impossible!” Llai snapped.

Karle snapped back, “Llai, stop saying that. Let him speak.”

“Ryan heard him,” Nick continued. “He asked some Valdor friends to help and they went and found him.
