The first cut will be the outline cut, using the 2 mm round bur. Adjust the water flow to about a drop of water per second and use a medium motor speed (about midway between the slowest and fastest speed of your motor). Proceed to cut on the scribed lines of the entire design. Cut to a depth of about one third the diameter of the 2 mm round bur. Do not try to cut to this depth in one pass: gradually work to the proper depth. Outline the petals and leaf in this manner. Wash the glass and dry it with a soft paper towel or cloth. Inspect your work and compare it to the drawing from both the engraving and viewing sides.

After you are satisfied that the outline cut is in good order, proceed to the smoothing cut. Adjust the water flow to get a drop of water about every two seconds. Using the same 2 mm round bur and a very slow motor speed, begin to carefully smooth the outside edges of the outline cut. Except for the stem, the inside of the outline cut will be cut away later, so there is no point in smoothing the inside of the outline cut. Wash the glass, dry it, and inspect for unwanted irregularities and chips on the outside of the outline cuts. Check your work again with the drawing and make corrections, if needed.
