Urgency

The urgency of communication describes its level of immediacy to the audience. Depending on the nature of the communication, it may be best conveyed as soon as it is available or it may make sense to wait and provide it in the normal course of other information, such as in a periodic team meeting or a summary update.

Many communications are intuitively urgent or not urgent. For example, updates on service interruptions are obviously urgent. Nonetheless, it can be a good idea to specifically outline what types of communications you see as urgent and which you do not. You can confirm your assessment with your manager and senior leadership to make sure you are aligned on how you intend to conduct ongoing communications. This is helpful guidance to provide to your engineering team.

Once you have all of this information, you can put together a communication plan outlining who your audiences are and the appropriate format, duration, depth, and urgency for them. These plans are likely to evolve as you get to know your audiences and their needs better.
