CHAPTER 9

A rather large group of vampires left our estate in the wee hours of the next morning, leaving in me a determination to do what needed to be done so that I could join them. Among those that left with Alex were Paul, Kathryn, Brad, and Kyle, as well as countless others who ranged from hired bodyguards to recruited help.

Notably missing from the group was Ethan, who was spending the day at his pharmaceutical company. Ethan had built Rettings from the ground up during the early 1900’s, when medications like insulin and penicillin were first being produced and distributed. Of course, humans didn’t know that Ethan wasn’t the great, great, grandson of the original owner. They just knew he was incredibly informed, and mature beyond his years, a combination that earned him the respect and trust of those in the business world.

Ethan had informed the gathering last night that he needed to wrap a few things up at Rettings, and then he’d pick the girls and me up late tonight to escort us to Originem Academy in Sweden. I was already dreading the long flight with two six year olds, but my excitement to see the academy, as well as my anticipation for the rest of my plan, would see me through. In fact, I would probably be more fidgety than Lola on the jet ride over, and that was saying a lot.

I had all of our luggage packed by the time I said my goodbyes to Alex. While I was a tearful mess, Alex was gentle and reassuring. He was always phenomenal at being the solid anchor for me to hold onto. I had to remind myself that I’d be seeing him much sooner than expected. That reminder to myself was the only thing that allowed me to tolerate the physical pain our separation was causing. The bond between Alex and I was so strong and intense, that it was normal to experience actual physical symptoms when we were away from each other for extended periods of time.

Heidi was waiting for me when I came down the stairs, anticipating finding some chore or the other to occupy my jittery nerves. Her petite form was stick straight as she sat on an emerald green velvet chair in the foyer. She was making a great show of waiting patiently; her hands folded in her lap, but a conflicting look of impatience was on her fairy-like face. The halo of curly, carrot red hair and blazing green eyes only furthered the image of her likeness to a sprite.

As soon as she spotted me she popped out of the seat, bounding up to me with the energy of a small child.

“I’ve been waiting for you all morning. We have a ton of work to do if you’re going to have shifting mastered by the time Ethan picks you up.”

My eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Is this going to take all day? I thought it was supposed to come natural?”

Heidi rolled her eyes at me good-naturedly.
