TEMOGNATHA ALTERNATA

This strikingly coloured jewel beetle was first discovered in 1882, but its secretive nature makes it very hard for scientists to study. So mysterious is this species that no one has yet seen or studied its larvae or eggs.

Like other jewel beetles, it may be that Temognatha alternata seeks out wood that has been damaged by forest fires to lay its eggs. To find the most suitable wood for its young, some jewel beetles can sense the smoke from forest fires from up to 50 miles away.

LENGTH: Up to 26 mm

DIET: Unknown

FOUND IN: Forests of Queensland, Australia
