Themes of Isaiah 40–66

Isaiah 40–66 focuses primarily on three themes. The first two appear more commonly in the earlier chapters, while the third appears throughout. The three themes are as follows: (1) God’s people are in captivity because of their sins; (2) the captivity proves God is God, because he predicted it; (3) God will now redeem his people—through Cyrus and in other ways.

Isaiah and the New Testament: “What Was Spoken through the Prophet Isaiah”

The following chart shows a list of Isaianic quotations in the New Testament that appear to support a single authorship view by the New Testament writers. They do so in that they specifically mention Isaiah as speaking the words some scholars attribute to Deutero-Isaiah or Trito-Isaiah. Matthew, Luke, John, and Paul all cite material from Isaiah 40–66.
