It was a good thing Harrison had learned navigational skills while he was a traveling nurse, so he could find his way back to the gym for his bike and then home. However, nothing had prepared him for finding his way back to a “friends only” relationship with a woman after he’d kissed her.

Rather, after she’d kissed him.

And what a kiss.

Sure, he could have used the GPS app on his phone, but he didn’t feel like having a pushy voice tell him what to do right now. He’d rather hear Anise’s gentle voice, the one that always soothed him and made him feel calmer.

He could think when she was around.

Too bad nobody had invented a GPS app that would navigate complicated relationships.

Harrison wanted to follow her to make sure she’d be okay. However, considering the way she’d just literally run from his arms, he doubted she’d welcome his company. She probably wouldn’t appreciate him shadowing her either. Since he’d heard her talk to Miss Eugenia about her sunset walks and jogs by the river, she surely felt safe. As she’d said, this was Natchez, not San Diego.

However, it just wasn’t in him to leave her defenseless after what happened. That wasn’t how real men operated. Although it wouldn’t surprise him if Abe had given her self-defense training. Who knew? Maybe she could even take Harrison down.

He ambled down the bridge to the ramp then turned south on Broadway, the direction he’d seen her take. No doubt she was heading home, her Jeep forgotten at the gym. If he couldn’t follow close, he’d at least try to keep her in his sight from a distance. Jase had said he was a city slicker, and he was probably right. Harrison didn’t know much about small-town life. But he still didn’t like her walking alone in the dusk.

As he crossed Canal Street, his phone buzzed. He reached for it, swiped the screen.

A text from Trevor.

Checking in to see how it’s going with your son.

He checked the time. Trevor must be home from work. He hit dial.

“Hey. I hear traffic—at least, I think that’s what it is. Sounded like just one car. You outside?” Trevor said as he turned on the video call, getting straight to the point as usual, without a lot of social niceties.

Yeah, Anise did that too. He might get a quick “Hi,” but then she usually got right down to business. Strange as it sounded, it put him at ease. He never had to listen to meaningless chatter or complaining or verbal manipulation with her. Or with Trevor.

“I’m outside, all right, walking home alone from a—a situation.”

“Sounds like trouble with a woman.”

“I don’t know what to call it. Not really trouble...it was just a situation.”

Trevor walked the phone over to the stove and set it on a stand, and Harrison heard the sound of meat searing in a pan.

Trevor stirred it and added some kind of seasoning. Probably Thai food, his favorite. “We’re talking about Anise, right?”

Harrison puffed out a breath.
