It was well into the afternoon but we decided to just jump into it. I changed into the loose-fitting clothing he'd brought and we went outside. I was wearing sneakers and the snow was slippery. He grasped onto my hand, keeping me steady.

I took a moment to stare at the forest, which was so fucking beautiful it took my breath away. I breathed in deeply; this was my home. The woods. I felt so at one with nature in the moment. Then Christian pulled on my hand, dragging me forward and we began to jog.

Suddenly, an image slammed into my head. The sneer on Scarface's face. "You mean, she can't even shift yet?"

A low rumble of laughter from my dad. "Don't worry, it'll come soon."

I was fourteen and almost all of the other kids from my generation were already able to shift. Shame burned my face even now and I jerked my hand out of Christian's.

"What the hell?"

He frowned. "I'm sorry, Pinky. But even you said that the, and I quote, 'calm shit,' wasn't going to work on you."

My face grew redder as I suddenly realized that I'd belittled his methods, and he hadn't even said anything about it in the car. "Look, I'm sorry I called it that. I didn't mean it like that." I sighed, frustrated and looked away. "I just don't know how the hell to make this work. And if we can't get this down then I'm going to have to learn some serious Jedi skills to beat Sophia."

He took my hand, then pulled my chin up to make me meet his eyes. "It's okay. And look, you were right. That method won't work right now. But this method will. Just trust me, okay? I know it's going to be painful but that's kinda the point."

I stared into his eyes, so soulful and concerned, and nodded. "Okay."

He beamed, his smile bright. "All right, let's get this bitch moving."

I grinned and we began a slow jog. He gripped onto my hand and another memory seeped into my mind. It was night and my parents thought I was asleep. I was probably about eight. I was standing on the back porch, clutching my blanket around my shoulders and staring at the woods where my parents had gone on a run, in wolf-form. My nanny was asleep in the room below mine and I'd snuck past it to look for my parents.

I shivered in the cool spring air and turned my face up to stare at the moon overhead. An energy pulsed through me, throbbing and aching. I longed for the forest. I felt the call of the moon - it beckoned me answer. I felt my wolf magic pressing against my skin and it buzzed like electricity. I longed to shift, to become the wolf I was meant to be. But I had no idea how.

That was the first night my dad had told me the story of the moon Goddess, Luna. There was something about the story that I knew I was supposed to figure out.
