Pride and satisfaction flowed through me knowing I could bring my mate such comfort and peace. I couldn’t wait until we were home.

Then the thought hit me. What if my people didn’t like her? What if she didn’t like where I lived? What would she say when they asked where she was from? They would think she was mad when she named a place heard of only in stories.

“Avery?”

“Hmmm.”

I smiled at how she snuggled into me. She felt so good against me.

“When we get to the village, I think it would be better if we kept you...” Dwarf feces. How should I put it so she didn’t get angry? Elven women were strongly independent and when they were asked to step back, it usually didn’t go well.

I sat up. “You know, now that you mention it, I’m not sure what the others will think of me,” she said. “You believe me about being from Earth, but from what you’ve said, that bit of info shouldn’t be shared if I don’t want the others thinking I’m nuts.”

Nuts? My deep breath rushed out. “I agree. What do you think we should do?” A great way to stay out of trouble was to ask what she thought. Then I’d know what to say to get her to agree with me. So far, so good, though.

She sucked in the side of her lips. “How about we say that you found me at the market and rescued the damsel from the evil orcs.”

I snickered at her dramatic words. “What about where you come from?”

“I could claim to have amnesia,” she said. “That way I won’t have to answer questions about my past and why I can’t use magic.”

I wasn’t sure I believed her last statement. I had a theory about her magic that I’d have to test later. “That sounds like it would work. Great idea.” I scratched my idea to go with hers. She was a genius. I would’ve never thought to use memory loss. How original.

I magicked shoes again for her. “Would you like to put these on this time?”

She smiled and looked at her fiddling hands. “I kinda liked not putting them on last time.”

I laughed and squeezed her against me. Powers that be, I couldn’t wait. Then it dawned on me. We may need to wait longer, unless we shared the news of our mating. Dwarf feces again.

I helped her put them on as we teased each other. She lifted her legs out from the horse’s sides. “I like them. They are cute. Make my feet look big, though.”

I laughed and wrapped both arms around her, taking in the scent of her hair. I wanted to get as much of her as possible before we were separated. “My love, your feet are adorable.”

I slid my hands around her stomach and squeezed, my arms celebrating at holding my mate once more.

Haetros neighed and I moved my hands away. I let out my signature trill, listening to it echo in the distance.

Avery cringed. “What was that for?”

“We are approaching the kingdom’s land.
