Chapter 13

“New students will come to think of our diverse and exciting student body as a vibrant family!”

Garden State University New Student Pamphlet

Stacy rested her elbows on the brand new kitchen island which Kass had somehow gotten installed into their fraternity house practically overnight. “So, what do you think?”

Amity smiled up at her. “I’m afraid that I can’t help you with this, sweetie. You know if it were within my power, I’d do anything for you, but my powers don’t really work that way.”

“But you make people happy!” She argued. “That’s your thing, right? Why can’t you just like… take his pain away or something?”

She had a small sound like she thought Stacy was just adorable. She patted her on the head. “Oh, look at you. Aren’t you just the cutest little thing trying to help poor Hazard.” She put her hand beneath Stacy’s chin and held Stacy’s face, like she just could believe how precious it was that she was actually trying to do something. “Oh, what a nice young woman you are. I could just eat you up.”

Stacy rolled her eyes in the same way that someone might do around their elderly aunt who kept treating them like they were six. She rested her cheek in her palm and absently ate a dab of cookie dough from the bowl Amy had sitting on the counter. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, Aim.”

Amity glided back to the counter and took her bowl away. “Oh, mustn’t eat cookie dough, sweetie. It has raw egg in it and the flour isn’t heat-treated.” She tapped a finger against the tip of Stacy’s nose. “You’ll get a tummy ache and then die.” She sang the words out, like she was talking about opening presents on Christmas morning.

Stacy rolled her eyes again and wandered out onto the fraternity house’s balcony to look out over the university’s grounds.

“I could have told you that wouldn’t work.” Emily informed her from her spot on a lounge chair. “Aim’s powers are strictly the emotional. She could probably make Hazard act high on life forever like some drug addict, but she can’t take the pain away.”

“Drug addicts aren’t happy.” Amy sang from the kitchen. “That’s completely different and you know it, Em. I commend you for wanting to include the disenfranchised in your worldview though. You’re always so community-minded.”

Emily reached for her drink. “That’s me, Aim. You know I love the little guys.”

Stacy leaned against the railing. “How about you, then? You’re in charge of pain and anger and stuff, right?”

“Yeah. Causing it.” She snorted. “Taking it away is someone else’s department. You want Hazard to start killing everything in sight in an insane rage-fueled frenzy, I’m your girl. You want him to his lose the nasty case of gout or whatever the fuck you think he’s got, talk to someone else.”

“You mean you can’t do anything for him?”

She thought that over for a minute. “I got some Midol in my purse.” She made a show of reaching for it.
