Offering quality education for international students entails a good understanding of the cultural aspects and effective methods of knowledge transfer which are integrated with optimal learning processes (Rajaram and Bordia 2011). The shift of Chinese learning culture due to rapidly changing Chinese political, social and cultural environment to acclimatize itself to the new globalized and highly technology-dependent world remains to be further examined at a much deeper level.

Researchers are still trying to understand the influence of culture on Chinese students’ reluctance on participating in class (e.g. Yu 2016; Chris and Arthur 2014). With the increase in popularity of distance learning due to the increase in Internet access, research interests are also shifting towards the influence of culture on Chinese students’ online classroom behaviour (Zhang 2013; Tian and Qian 2014). This is illustrated through a study done by Zhang (2013) on online US education environment on how the Confucian heritage culture affects students coming from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. She finds that the Confucian culture, especially the idea of power distance, affects these students’ online learning. Students’ respect for authority, in this case the instructors, prevented them from seeking help from the instructors, instead, they turned to their peers for help.
