“When Burroughs went to bed he found a nest of flying squirrels.” John Burroughs, author and naturalist. (photo credit 22.2)

In the three days that followed, Theodore and Burroughs searched at a more leisurely pace, and were able to spot over seventy-five species of birds. The President identified all of them but two, which Burroughs, to his chagrin, could not recognize, either. The naturalist was also amazed at his host’s botanical knowledge. “Roosevelt seemed to know the flowers as well as he did the birds.”

The time spent in the cabin was almost as diverting as that spent outdoors.

One evening as we sat in the lamplight, he reading Lord Cromer on Egypt and I a book on the man-eating lions of Tsavo, and Mrs. Roosevelt sitting near with her needlework, suddenly Roosevelt’s hand came down on the table with such a bang that it made us both jump, and Mrs. Roosevelt exclaimed in a slightly nettled tone, “Why, my dear, what is the matter?”

He had killed a mosquito with a blow that would almost have demolished an African lion.
