Edible flowers
Flowers are the key to a healthy and abundant garden ecosystem, attracting pollinators and in turn birds and other helpful wildlife. While there are plenty to choose from, I like to grow flowers that are multipurpose: beautiful, fragrant, low maintenance, self-sowing and, most importantly, edible! Here are some plants that have excellent edible flowers that can be added to dishes of all kinds. Many of them also offer their own fruits, tasty leaves and even seeds. Of course, not all flowers are edible â be sure you know exactly what youâre harvesting before you consume it and also be sure the flowers have been grown organically and havenât been sprayed with pesticides. Generally the petals are the best bits of a flower for eating â the centres and sepals (the green part at the base of a flower) can be bitter and are best avoided. This section refers to the edibility of the flowers for each species â unless otherwise mentioned, do not consume the rest of the plant.
