EDGING OPTIONS

Edging is used to keep grass that is growing beside beds from creeping into the beds. It is also used around raised beds to hold in the soil and mulch. Edging is often chosen for its decorative look.

If your beds will be next to lawn, you can edge them or not. You could just dig a trench to below the grass roots’ level where the bed meets the lawn, and you won’t need edging. The trench will work just as well to keep grass out of your beds.

The cheapest edging is plastic, not a sustainable material. If you choose plastic, get professional grade and use stakes to hold it in the ground.

Rocks can be used for edging, as can paver bricks, available from landscape supply companies. Paver bricks can make mowing next to beds easy—the mower wheels just run along the bricks if you place their tops flush with the lawn’s surface. New methods are also available for easily making concrete edging against lawn. The most sustainable material for edging is usually natural rock or wood from your area.
