Looney In-Tunes. Any movie with a plot about a successful musician returning to his hometown for any reason will feature a scene where he or she picks up his “first” instrument or sits in front of his grandmother’s piano. Of course this instrument is in tune.

Patty Sundberg, Tucson, Ariz.

Love Boat Rule. Any character who coughs at any time has a terminal illness. Happens all the time on “The Love Boat,” oddly enough. See Camille.

James R. Jokerst, Maryland

Love-Hate Principle. Any attractive man and woman who hate each other at the beginning of a movie will be in love at the end.

Charles D. Story, Elmhurst, Ill.

Lucky Pedestrians. No matter how many trash cans, water hydrants, fruit carts, or other cars get hit during a car chase or by a runaway auto, pedestrians are safe from harm. The rationale is simple. Hit a pedestrian, and that would distract from the mindless action.

Merwyn Grote, St. Louis
