The second prototype (43-50225), which flew on 1 August 1944, was later fitted with a more conventional single canopy as shown here. As a demonstration of its capabilities it was flown from Long Beach, California, to Bolling Field, DC in 5 hours 17 minutes averaging 433.6mph in early December 1945. Unfortunately it was then lost in an accident a few days later.

Despite the impressive performance of the XB-42, the Air Force did not order it in to production, preferring to wait for the more advanced jet bombers now in prospect as the Second World War drew to a close. However, it was decided to adapt the remaining XB-42 for research purposes by adding a pair of 1,600lb.s.t. Westinghouse 19XB-2A turbojets below the wings. In this form the aircraft was redesignated the XB-42A and flew on 27 May 1947, spending the next two years undergoing various tests and trials before being struck off charge. It still exist today in the collection of historic aircraft of the National Air & Space Museum, Washington DC. WC
