In this stifling atmosphere, Menovshchikov, compared with many of his peers at the Leningrad Institute of Linguistics, was a respectable and well-disposed man. He worked hard; in fact, all his life was work. He often smiled and told jokes; he was on equal terms with his graduate students, never putting on airs of being “the boss.” He was also quiet, reserved, and tolerant in the toxic milieu of the institute’s intrigues, bureaucratic fights, and personal accusations.

I am certainly biased: Menovshchikov was the teacher who, in the early 1970s, introduced me to the world of Yupik linguistics, and I feel great respect for the man. I am sure that most of my colleagues will agree: he may not have been a great linguist, but he was a good and honest man—which, at the time, was a lot.
