HEY, DON’T MAKE THIS MISTAKE

When I was 16, I was on the roster of the local musician’s referral service and was pretty busy playing your typical fill-in jobs: weddings, parties, a few bars (I had to leave the bar during breaks because I was underage). By this time I’d been playing professionally for about two years and was getting pretty comfortable playing the types of music I was called to do (mostly light rock, swing, and country). And, I was starting to get pretty regular work.

So what do I do? Well, I do what any cocky teenager does when he starts feeling “successful.” I forget that I’m just a hired hand and a dime-a-dozen musician, and I start overplaying to suit my fancy. Okay, to be quite honest, I was beginning to feel like I wasn’t able to stretch my musical muscles at these gigs, but that’s no excuse for what happened one night in a bowling-alley bar.

On this particular gig, I was playing with a country band and I got bored so I started throwing in rolls and turning the beat around. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but at one point I think I played one continuous 32nd note roll between the snare drum and bass drum during an entire second verse, drowning out the singer and throwing off the bass player. Needless to say, I never got called to work with that band again. In fact, I mysteriously lost a lot of my regular gigs after that. The funny thing is that I didn’t even know what I’d done until years later.
