Therapy & Stress Reduction
Drumming has been shown to offer plenty of additional brain benefits apart from IQ improvement. As mentioned before, drumming is also a great form of creative expression, and group drumming can improve social skills, teamwork, discipline and self-esteem. Drumming can balance internal and external energy (great for kids who often have too much or too little of one or the other), improve the mood, encourage physical fitness, and generally enrich a childâs life, providing the child an enjoyable activity to return to and practice. Drumming also improves coordination, relieves stress, and can be a source of physical and mental therapy. Drumming offers stability and consistency in an ever-changing world.
Research into the therapeutic benefits of drumming is just beginning. However, itâs safe to say that drumming can allow its performer to blow off some steam through the physicality of drumming and through exploring individual creativity. In recent studies, the results have given this theory validity, for theyâve shown that drumming can not only reduce stress, but can effectively benefit the immune system, which, in turn, impacts the drummerâs overall health.
A study led by Barry Bittman, a neurologist at the Mind-Body Wellness Center in Meadville, Pennsylvania, tested 111 healthy individuals in separate groups. Everyone experienced a drop in cortisol levels (a stress indicator), but he discovered that those patients who participated in group drum circles or group drumming of any kind were provided a boost of natural killer cells, those immune system cells which fight cancer and disease. The study indicates that the reduction in stress is due to the positive physical, mental and emotional effects of drumming. The rhythm of drumming and the ability to express oneself, alongside the social connection of group drumming and the physiological aspect of sound waves on the bodyâs cells combined to affect a positive influence upon the bodyâs immune system.
