Does this seem too simple? Well, in a way it is, and in the rest of this chapter and the book we build on this model and refine it. Nevertheless, the real truth about making progress towards your dream is that the underlying way you do this is very simple – you take a series of steps, one step at a time. It is the accumulation of steps that gets you to your end point.

Characteristics of Progress Makers

If making progress is that simple, what is it that enables some people to keep progressing, whilst others never get to their dreams? Here's a list of a few personal characteristics to help you think about yourselfand learn how to be great at making progress.

People who achieve their dreams are:

Activity oriented: progress never occurs unless you do something. Progress makers are driven to action all the time. When there is an opportunity to do something, they do it. Contrast this with other people who suffer from what we call inertia. These people can never get the momentum of progress going, and are always finding reasons not to take the next step. When progress makers have a spare hour, they don't watch TV or read what others have said on Facebook – they are either taking a step or reviewing their map. If you want to achieve your dreams, take a step, then another and then another! It is the only way.

Outcome focused: being activity oriented is great, but it needs to be supported by an outcome focus. Activity needs to lead somewhere. To take a good step, you don't need to look at your feet very often; you need to look towards where you are going. You have a map showing the way. Use it.

Driven and flexible: great progress makers are driven. They don't lose interest after a few hard days or when the first problems arise. They continue to push forward. But pushing forward is not about blindly going down one route if it is not working. Great progress makers are flexible. They adapt when their plans do not work, and do more of the things they find that do work.
