Whether you’re running a team or trying to get a book published, you need to look at your process. Obsessively document what you’re already doing. Zoom in on the recurring hiccups. Then design better systems that circumvent these unproductive habits.

I learned this eventually. But even right then and there, in year one, I made a conscious commitment:

The shit storms will be a part of this whole adventure, and in order to keep growing and getting better, I’m going to have to be OK with this. I’m going to have my ass handed to me at the same time that I’m seeing some pretty snazzy articles about me that make it seem like H&B is this problem-free land of milk and honey. I need to be OK with the sometimes gaping distance between those two realities. I need to be OK with always, ALWAYS, taking ownership of the mistakes and moving forward. Sometimes I would make the mistakes, sometimes others would; there is no distinction between the two. I’d have to own all of it, and to show up, and to make it right—internally and externally, whether I liked it or not.

Now I had a mantra: Always keep going. Always create forward progress.
