STEP TWO: BURNING THE CIRCLES AND FREE PLAY

» Now it’s time to burn the traced circles. You’ll want to create a ring for each number on the clock’s face to go inside. Place your burner tip on one of the circles you drew and follow the outline with your straight edge tip all the way around. Then trace a second circle around the first one to give it some weight and substance. Repeat this process with the other eleven circles.

» After you’ve burned all the circles, you’re going to add a third circle, to create an unburned area of space around all the numbers that will act as a barrier to the freehand burning you’ll add in the next step.

» Here’s the crazy fun part. Since you don’t have a template, you can create any pattern or texture you want. I decided to burn in a series of waves, lines and circles. Your design can be completely random or you can add in a series of patterns. Go crazy with it. Fill in the entire background up to the outer circles you burned in the previous step.

» When you’ve finished filling in the entire canvas with burned patterns, turn off your burner and let it cool. Switch the tip to the round tip 1. Turn your burner back on and let it heat up to medium heat.

» In the meantime, grab your pencil to sketch the numbers of the clock.
