Tengu get their name from the Chinese t’ien-kou, a celestial dog believed to have been inspired by real-life comets that landed in ancient China. The t’ien-kou is said to swallow the sun during eclipses. However, in Japan, the tengu is bird-like. Tengu are another species of yokai (supernatural spirits or demons found in Japanese folklore) that live in the mountains of Japan and hatch from eggs.
