It happened so gradually, I truly didnât realize the role I was cast in. In retrospect, I always was aiding Edward in some wayâhelping him in his business, with his accounts, mostly by e-mail. As I slowly handed over the vertebrae of my backbone to Edward, he became straighter and stronger, but I obviously was losing little bits of what held me up. Like, disks. I didnât experience it that way, but I did become a littleâ¦wobbly. And my back hurt! Like, what was going on here? And you know, Iâm not sure he didnât feel totally entitled to all of me, like it was his dueâdespite his reluctance to reciprocate, his deference, his guilt.
Winter came and went. She was traveling too much to ask him what was up. She was seeing other men desultorily and focusing on her darling baby girl, not so much a baby anymore at the age of eight, and working ungodly hours at the show. She just liked the EGG, thatâs all.
âI loved the sense of calm and quiet surrounding him,â she said. âI loved his slow way of moving, of talking to me when we were making love. I still loved his sweetnessâeven if it was offered only when it was not needed.â
Over time, though, as nothing much happened from one breakfast to the next, she began to feel vaguely used. But she didnât quite know what she was being used forâcertainly not for sex. She began noticing, too, that on some level, sheâd been trying to prove herself to him, to woo him, win him. She did this almost reflexively, not consciously. Consciously, the fact that he wasnât all that deeply âintoâ her didnât fully register; his elusivenessâa wistfulness, reallyâhad become woven into their dynamic. Not accustomed to being incidental in someoneâs life, though, she thought that at any moment heâd wake up, drop his mysterious noncommittal façade, and declare himself mad for her.
