Natasha’s heart went out to Daniel, remembering how difficult that first shift had been, and she’d known what to expect. He had her hand gripped tightly in his, and showed no sign of letting go, but she didn’t mind holding his hand.

She leaned back against the bench and settled in to wait with Daniel until he felt better. Sitting there with him, she suddenly understood why he was having so much trouble. “Daniel, you have to stop fighting the shift,” she said. “I think that’s why you’re having those dizzy spells.”

“What?” he asked, turning to look at her.

“I think you’re fighting shifting and it’s throwing everything out of balance,” she said. “I was taught that when the feeling starts coming on, to go with it, to imagine yourself as the dragon you’ll become,” she said, talking as much to herself as Daniel.

Daniel was silent for a moment. “I don’t know if I can do that; it’s...scary,” he admitted.

“It’s scary for me too, even now, but it’s part of who we are, and we have to learn to control it, or it will control us,” Natasha said, dredging up all the lessons she’d learned over the years. “I think if you just stop trying to fight shifting, you won’t have all these intense side effects.”

Daniel gave her a weak smile. “Well, I haven’t tried that yet.”

They were silent for a long time, then Daniel asked, “Natasha, what are you doing here?”

She turned and looked at him. “I’m here trying to help you,” she said, feeling confused by the question.

“No, I mean what are you doing at the estate? Why are you involved in this?” he asked.

Natasha sighed; she’d been dreading this question because she didn’t really have a good answer. “To be honest with you, I’m not sure; I guess your dad thinks I can help you, but this isn’t what I was trained for.”

“I think I’m missing something,” Daniel said, confusion on his face.

“I work for The Opal Society, and I guess your father by extension. I’m a trained assassin,” she said, then couldn’t help but laugh at the look on his face.

“But that’s ridiculous; you’re...” Daniel didn’t finish his sentence.

“If you say that I’m a girl, I’ll beat you up again,” she said, but she was smiling, enjoying his confusion.

“What about your family? How do they feel about that?” he asked.

Natasha shook her head. “I don’t have any family, remember? My dad left me at the orphanage your parents run when I was just a little girl, and it wasn’t long before I was training to serve The Society. I had raw talent, and your dad saw that.”

Daniel was silent for a long time, clearly thinking about what she’d just admitted to him. “So, you go around killing bad dragon shifters?” he finally asked, still a bit incredulous.

Natasha nodded, then said, “Well, that’s the idea. I haven’t exactly killed any yet. I’d just finished my training when Marcus called me here.”

“To help me?” he asked, wondering why Marcus had chosen Natasha.
