STEP 1. Make your dragon scales with authentic soft curves easily by using the curved edges of any kitchen or personal care product bottle. The bottle material is tough, stiff, and lightweight, just like a real dragon scale.

STEP 2. Using the template in this chapter as a guide, or making up your own shape, mark out the shape of your dragon scale so that it straddles the corner of a plastic bottle, or right over the top shoulder for a really curvy scale.

STEP 3. Carefully and neatly cut out the scale shape using a pair of strong kitchen scissors. You should be able to cut quite a few from a single bottle; wash off the marker with soap and water and kitchen scouring pad.

However they may have been collected, dragon scales certainly do make entertaining pieces, and their beautiful symmetry and iridescent color never fails to delight the eye of even the most scientific observer. For this reason display grade scales were always been in high demand, and by the early 1900s the buying and selling of dragon scales dominated every country’s dragonolia trade.

As a result, there was an outcry when the trade in dragon materials and artifacts was prohibited in the 1930s. The ban was not all bad news though, because when the manufacture of artificial dragonolia began in earnest I was able to put the Barons Manor workshop to good use in order to supply a market hungry for firebelly products. Within a few short years a booming traffic developed for all manner of man-made dragonry products, and the Barons Brand became world famous for quality and unsurpassed refinement. But by far the most successful of all our products were our beautiful man-made dragon scales.

We developed two methods for making them. The first was a most expensive and time-consuming process, and involved growing the scales from a bath of minerals. The second, a rather simpler and cheaper method (although somewhat inferior), involved a process of casting them from a specially prepared beetle wing-cover paste.

The artificial scales grown using our patented process from a special bath of mineral salts were perfect in every way. The process was an immediate success and scales made using this method easily fooled even the most experienced dragonologist.
