Chapter 15

After Drake met with the real estate agent and urged his constantly bickering companions into the Jeep, they set out for the patron’s vineyard estate. He grew more and more anxious to say farewell of Alice who lost no opportunity to provocatively rub against him and infuriate Pip.

After taking a shower earlier, her appearance had dramatically improved. Her stringy blond hair now shone a soft gold and floated down her back to her waist. Fast vampire healing had removed all traces of her bruises and sunken cheeks. In an old pair of his sweat pants and polo shirt, she almost resembled her old self except for flashes of aggression in her amber eyes and a new sexy sway of her hips when she walked.

“I’m riding in the front, cause it’s my Dad’s car.” The boy elbowed her aside and climbed in beside Drake.

Alice glared at him. She then cast a sultry glance at Drake. “Are you sure you want the boy beside you instead of me?”

“Just get in the car.” He tossed their bags and cooler in the back and swung into the driver’s side, irritation burning a hole through him.

Pip crossed his arms over his chest, stuck out his bottom lip and leaned against the door, face pressed to the window. Alice shrugged and took her seat in the back. Thankfully, she remained silent for the next half hour, which gave him a respite. His mind turned to Talia and the pain of their separation. New York seemed so far away. Even if he succeeded in dropping Alice with the patron, he had a long drive from California before he could see his love. He longed to touch her smooth skin, see the flash of strength in her eyes, and taste the passion of her lips. He craved their joining the same way he craved blood.

He glanced in his rearview mirror to find Alice’s penetrating gazed fixed on him. He’d loved her blue eyes when she was a human, like the sky on a clear spring day, sunny and open. Now they burned deep and mysterious, hot with some unfulfilled need. It unnerved him.

“Mind if I look at your cell phone a minute?” she asked. “I noticed you doing a lot of different things with it. It’s fascinating.”

He hesitated then handed his phone to her. “It’s the new iPhone.”

“I seem to remember about cell phones.”

After a few moments, she handed it back. “Interesting. I’d like to have one.”

“I’m sure Marco would help you get one.”

When he pulled to the gate of the patron’s home, numerous vampires moved along the fence and hurried to the side of the Jeep.

One, a buff, blond male who had surely surfed in his human form, motioned for him to roll down his window. “The Patron has been expecting you.” He glanced at Alice. “Do you vouch for the woman?”

“Yes. She’s here to join the flock.” He hoped he spoke true.

The man nodded and gestured to two others to open the gate.

Drake pulled into the courtyard and stopped.
