Get as low as you can. In a home, you can move to a basement level to ride out a twister. Basements are usually the sturdiest part of the house, with concrete or cinderblock walls and thick steel beams holding up the central floor joists. Move away from any openings—such as windows or walk-out doors—that a projectile could penetrate. Get in the center of the room and hunker down. If you have your wits about you, or time to prepare, take down to the basement protective gear—bike helmets, football helmets, or construction hard hats all work—for everyone in your family (to protect your heads), water and a little food, a flashlight, your mobile phone, and your crank radio. Unfortunately, you might not be able to tell if the twister has spiraled out of the area or extinguished itself completely. Use your radio, phone neighbors, and cautiously peer out of basement windows.
