LEARNING APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR

The older literature tended to over-emphasise inappropriate sexual behaviour such as public masturbation, genital exposure and touching others genitalia or breasts; but these behaviours are not as common as was thought. Children with Down syndrome, like many typical children, need to learn about touching, hugging or kissing people, and about personal space – not getting too close physically when engaging in everyday interactions. Parents can reduce problems with relatively simple training; stop the child hugging and kissing everyone; teach them to judge the personal distance as an arms-length away; discuss differences between family members, close friends and others. There are programmes to teach appropriate sexual and social behaviours, both as part of protecting children from others and taking care when touching others (Resources).
