This slightly altered version of Chapters 22–26 of They Shall Not Have Me, Hélion’s account of his experiences as a prisoner of war in Nazi prison camps, tells the story of his escape from Germany onto French soil. In the 2012 Arcade edition of the book—the first edition since it became a bestseller in 1943—an afterword by the artist’s widow, Jacqueline Hélion, gives further details of the escape which Hélion could not reveal in 1943 for fear of drawing Nazi retribution down on those who had helped him escape, but remained in Germany or France.
