Lizzie clicked. “Yes!” she said as she tossed a treat. “Such a good girl.”

Later that day, while Aunt Amanda was cooking dinner, Lizzie sat at the kitchen table with two very tired dogs at her feet. She opened the notebook her aunt had given her.

Training Diary, Day One, she wrote. Both dogs have responded very well to clicker training. Donut is young but eager to learn. Bowser is an older, very obedient dog. After a few sessions of Step One training, both dogs understood that each click means that a treat is coming soon. Step One is complete. Next, we did Step Two, helping the dogs understand that they need to do something to earn the click. This took a little more work, especially on Donut’s part, but they both seem to get it now. Tomorrow we will move on to teaching a simple trick.

“Donut really did great, didn’t she?” Lizzie asked her aunt. “I mean, we can’t all be Bowser and be perfect right away, but for a puppy this young?” She reached down and gave Donut a scratch on the head. “Little smartie,” she said.

Donut rubbed against Lizzie’s hand. Then she lay down with her face between her paws and let out a long sigh.
