Aidan really didnât want to be around for this, but there wasnât anything that could keep him away. Heâd purposely kept his schedule free just so he could be here on this warm Saturday evening. Molly had a date for the senior prom.
And Aidan had a plan. Well, sort of.
âMake her believe.â
If it took another two years, or five years, or even ten. Somehow, he was going to do just that.
Aidan couldnât rely on pretty words to convince Molly, and that was okay. Words, by themselves, donât mean all that much, do they? He had to show her. Even if that meant watching her go off to prom with some asshole. God knows, that was going to be a proverbial kick in the balls.
So, while Ginny and Michele were upstairs with Molly, doing all that girly shit to help her get ready, he was down here on the deck having a beer with his dad, already dressed in appropriate attire for the pre-prom family photos his stepmother would no doubt insist upon. Aidan knew how she rolled. And that just might work in his favor.
Molly came down the stairs and took his fucking breath away. She wore a gown of the palest blue. Enchanting and ethereal, she really looked like a princess. Her prince waited with flowers at the bottom of the stairs. Aidan swallowed. It should be him, but it wasnât.
He looked on as her date kissed her cheek and slid the flowers onto her wrist. Michele and her camera capturing every moment. Aidan didnât know who this guy was, Molly didnât have a boyfriendânot that he knew of anyway, but he was pretty sure heâd seen him before.
âYou look beautiful, sweetheart,â his dad said, choking up as he hugged her.
âSheâs all grown up. Billy would be so proud of her.â Ginny came up beside him, and squeezing his hand, they followed everyone outside. âAnd your mama would be proud of the fine young man youâve become.â Turning to Aidan, she wistfully smiled, her green eyes filling. âI canât help but imagine the two of them watching over you both from wherever they are.â
Michele lined up Gabby, Chris, Molly, and her date by the pool, the cove in the background, just as she had for his prom three years ago. He could still see her tugging on the hem of her little pink dress. She wouldnât look at him. Aidan remembered wanting to push Nicole away to scoop her up.
âJustin, Molly, let me get a few of you right here.â Michele posed them. âPerfect!â
Aidan chuckled to himself. Him, Molly? Really? Now he remembered who the little asshole was.
âAidan?â Right on cue, he was summoned by his stepmother. âI want some of you and your sister.â
And pushing Justin Landry out of his way, he scooped her right up. Aidan spun around, a cloud of pale blue tulle in his arms, until he made her laugh. âPut me down.â
He set her on her feet, hands holding her cheeks. Youâre beautiful.
Molly lowered her gaze, staring at his chest.
