If you think that you may be experiencing chronic stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, or even vicarious trauma, I highly encourage you to express your concern to those around you, the ones you trust. Check in with them on a daily basis by sharing your concerns and asking if they’ve noticed anything. Then reach out to a professional, whether a coach, a therapist, or a physician, to help you make a recovery plan. Remember, you deserve the same love and care you offer so many others. You matter, too.

There may be a correlation between the rise of trauma and vicarious trauma in the classroom, and the rise of teacher turnover rates in our nation. Perhaps a doctoral student will explore this potential correlation. Regardless, experiencing vicarious trauma and teaching burnout creates additional challenges and pressures on top of an already demanding and emotionally exhausting career. This may not be the sole reason for teacher turnover, but it is likely that the pressure created within this environment can lead those in education to leave the profession. Working in such conditions may lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, incompetent, and inadequately supported.
