Lee Aaron: The whole hard rock genre [and] record industry was policed by men back then, so you can’t really point a finger at one particular band. The antics of those bands, however, certainly didn’t help. Their audience was my audience, and it influenced the way I was viewed. In a weird way, it was confusing for them and for me. They may have bought a ticket to my show because they had the album and really dug the songs, but [some] also felt they had license to shout sexist comments my way. And worse, actually thinking that I might appreciate them. I became very good at deflecting sexist hecklers.

Being treated as an equal and with respect among my peers was the biggest challenge. There was this pervasive idea within that genre that women were props to be molded, dressed, and displayed in ways to please men and elevate their virility factor. Your value was viewed as higher if you were a “babe,” but having your voice heard — I mean really heard — in the boardroom or the studio was much tougher. I remember being on my sixth album, which went platinum, and most industry folks still didn’t know I wrote my own material. It was an uphill battle for respect.
