We were getting ready to leave the cove on Sunday afternoon, our fourth day surfing together, when I remembered something. “I can’t come until afternoon tomorrow,” I told Avery. “I have to babysit.”

“You babysit?” She looked impressed, as if I’d just told her I was meeting with the Pope or something. “I’m not allowed yet.”

“I just started. Actually, I’m starting tomorrow. It’s just three days a week, right in my neighborhood.” I tried not to sound as apprehensive as I felt. When I’d met with Mrs. Vargas last week, she’d been so outrageously grateful that I was interested—or so she thought, thanks to Josie—that I hadn’t had the heart to say no when she’d offered me the job. Besides, I’d realized I really could use the money. That art program wasn’t free, and my parents were more likely to say yes if I could offer to help with the fees. Plus, the twins were still young enough to take a nap every day, which would give me some time for sketching—something I hadn’t had as much time for as usual because of Avery’s lessons. Although somehow, I didn’t mind that as much as I’d thought I would. Teaching her was kind of fun.

Avery hoisted her board under her arm and started up the trail. “What time are you finished? Want to meet afterward?”

“Sure. I should be able to leave around four.” I couldn’t help being flattered that she seemed so worried about missing even one day here at the cove. Then again, it wasn’t a complete surprise. She was making a lot of progress. She could bodyboard pretty well now, and while her pop-up still needed work, she’d managed to wobble halfway in on a couple of easy waves the day before. I’d also started making her swim laps with me across the cove so she could get comfortable being out in the deeper water. I think she actually liked that part, especially when the dolphins were around. They always moved away when we came close, but I suppose it was still closer than she’d ever come to living out that dream of hers.
