Our training was nearly completed. We were in good condition, but we had a field problem to go through, and we were hiked to Colombey les Belles. Here we joined the Brigade in field maneuvers in and about the Bois de Colombey. It was tough, hard work, and supposed to simulate our coming action.

We adopted a new attack formation here that was supposed to cut down on casualties, and give more control to our officers. The first wave of the attack was to be the same as before, a long, thin line of skirmishers, but with the second wave in section and platoon columns. It seemed all right, but I noticed there was difficulty in maintaining liaison when in the forest. However, it would do when in the open.

We were in the second line and formed in section columns, when we lined up for the mock attack in Colombey les Belles. We casually advanced, until we came to a dense forest. As it was impossible to get through in formation, we did the next best thing: each man for himself.

We forged ahead, until we came to a fire lane about ten feet wide running across our way; then took the easy way out. All the troops were there, and we followed the trail, until we came out on the other side. We reformed there, and shortly merged with the company, and set out on the return hike to Selaincourt. It was not according to instructions, but the officers could hash that out later among themselves. This would be our last night in Selaincourt, and we were not sorry to be on our way again.
