Chapter Twelve
âHathcock, Moen, and Thatcherâ
âMr. Moen please.â
âMay I tell him who is calling?â
âDetective Moffat with the Eaglenest Police Department in Colorado.â I looked at my notes while I waited, which turned out to be several minutes. Iâve always wondered if all attorneys made you wait even when they didnât have to.
âThis is William Moen. How can I help you?â
He knew how he was going to help me. You didnât take a rich client who was going to be a murder suspect and not know who was going to be calling you about it.
âThis is Detective Moffat with the Eaglenest Police Department in Colorado. Iâm investigating the death of Mr. Gittleson. I understand Mrs. Gittleson has retained you, and I wanted to call and ask you about interviewing her.â
âIt appears youâve already interviewed her a couple of times.â He was sparring but it didnât seem personal. I could deal with that.
âWell, actually a detective from your area spoke to her at my request, but it appears they didnât hit it off. He sounds like he can be a little obnoxious.â Under the bus for the cause, Bell. Sorry.
âWell, letâs donât dance around it; is Mrs. Gittleson a suspect in the death of her husband?â
âEveryoneâs a suspect until I clear them.â
âIs she your main suspect?â
âI donât have a main suspect. Iâm just trying to eliminate people at this point.â He wasnât going to buy it, I knew, but itâs all it had.
âWhy would you even consider her a suspect?â With Tish, I could chalk that question up to simply not knowing any better. This guy was an attorney; he knew why Iâd suspect her. He just wanted to know if I had anything on his client besides what sheâd told us.
âWell, I obviously canât get into my case with you. I would just like to speak to your client to clear up a few matters.â
âSuch as?â
âWhat time she left. Those kinds of things.â He didnât believe me.
âIâll tell you what. You send me a list of written questions and Iâll see which ones I will let her answer.â
Shit. Smart move and not unexpected.
I got the email address and told him I would send the questions to him. I asked him to please have her do it as soon as possible and reminded him that if his client didnât have anything to do with it, it really did behoove her to cooperate so we could find the murderer.
The case was beginning to slow down. We were waiting on bank, phone, and credit card records, which could take up to thirty days. Even with court orders they could drag their feet. In my experience, the length of time corporations took to comply with court orders corresponded directly to how badly I needed the records. The more I needed them, the longer they took. I went home that night somewhat bummed.
The fourth day into the case may as well have been a holiday. Nothing happened worth writing in the case journal. It had definitely slowed down to the point that I couldnât justify keeping Randy working on it.
