Chapter 5

The Burden on the Family

When parents first learn they are expecting a child, so many emotions accompany this knowledge. Before a new baby is even born, the family begins to dream of what the child’s life will be like. They dream about seeing the child accomplishing major milestones from learning to walk all the way to graduating from college or getting married. The father of a little girl may dream of the secrets they will share, or the mother of a little boy may dream about attending little league games. All parents want their children to be successful, intelligent, kind, happy, and healthy.

Many parents even dream that their children will surpass their own skills and dreams. Family members may think about these dreams throughout the pregnancy, or even years before the child is conceived. When the family learns that the child has a developmental delay (whether they learn before the child is born or as the child grows and develops), these dreams can come to an abrupt halt.
