Figure 17.1: Reenactors Brendan Burke (left) and James Bullock (right), during videotaping of the historical reenactment of William Tillman, an African-American steward, retaking the schooner S. J. Waring from Confederate privateersmen. Tillman killed several privateersmen and then, with help from some crewmembers, sailed the previously captured prize to New York City. Tillman then became a hero in the North. Historical reenactments are often used in archaeology documentaries (credit: Emily Jane Murray/Pepe Productions).

So, based on our experience, here are several suggestions for shooting historical reenactments:

1. If filming a reenactment of a battle scene, first check with the local law enforcement agency to make sure that discharging a replica weapon is permitted.

2. There are many types of reenactors, so be careful to choose the most authentic looking. There are some reenactors who spend little time or money trying to look the part. Then there are the more mainstream reenactors who generally look the part but who use modern conveniences after hours. Finally, there are the hardcore authentic reenactors who totally immerse themselves into their roles and the time period. These reenactors also usually own period eyewear and jewelry and actually groom themselves in period styles. The latter is what you want.
