THE AQUAMAN PARADOX

Q:We need oxygen to breathe, and there is oxygen in water. So how come we can drown in water?

A:It’s because the oxygen atoms are in two different states. The oxygen floating around in the atmosphere is in what’s called a free state, meaning you can inhale them freely into your lungs.

But when it comes to water, each oxygen atom is chemically bonded to two hydrogen atoms (which is why we call it H2O). That chemical bond is so strong that the atoms can only be separated by sending an electrical current through the water in such a way that they will revert to their free states. That process is called electrolysis. And because your body can’t do this, the oxygen atoms in water will do your lungs no good at all.
