Many people who keep chickens do so mainly because of the continuous supply of fresh eggs, but do you know that having chickens can be helpful to the garden too?
If the planting season is over for the year, let the chickens get into your garden room and watch them go wild! They will dig up the stems and stalks of weeds and swallow any remaining weakened or overripe vegetables. They will eat any seeds or insects found in the soil and peck apart and digest the remains of plants, particularly the stems of broccoli, carrot tops, chard, and kale. Before this, they would scrape the earth and peck out secret worms or larvae, stirring the dirt in the process — all with infinite passion and excitement. Chickens don't only have a daily supply of fresh eggs — they even create enormous quantities of dung. Luckily, the chicken poo can be composted, recycled, and eventually returned to the ground. You'll collect about one cubic foot of manure per chicken in about six months period.
