Aligning the dividing head with the edge of the mill table using a square.

Checking alignment of the dividing head using a DTI along the edge of the base.

Checking alignment using a lathe test bar.

A further option is to use a lathe test bar mounted in the dividing head’s spindle taper and to run the DTI along this.

The dividing head can also be mounted vertically using an angle plate. First the angle plate is mounted square to the mill table using an engineer’s square, checking with a DTI if necessary. The dividing head is then bolted to the vertical face of the angle plate. The surest method of ensuring it is truly vertical is to rest its bottom edge on a parallel before tightening the mounting bolts. Alternatively, an engineer’s square can be used. Sufficient clearance should be provided between the dividing head and the mill table to allow unhindered operation of the dividing mechanism. This set-up is not particularly satisfactory due to a lack of rigidity and limited clearance between the dividing head spindle and lathe spindle. Using the lathe instead avoids these problems.
