one and showed where the owner was at any given moment. Squill was based at the conference center, she'd be able to find him with no difficulty. And dragging a reluctant Agrimony around Tiratattle was slowing her down. "All right," she said.

Agrimony squealed with delight. Squill hailed a cuddyak cart, and he and Agrimony climbed into it. It was upholstered in purple leather and adorned with violet feathers. This was traveling in real style; Agrimony looked thrilled. The cart pulled away, and Tansy watched them recede into the distance.

She went into a fertle-juice bar. No, the owner hadn't seen a tangle-child with straighter than average hair. Tansy ordered a drink; she wanted to sit down for a bit.

A lickit came over and sat down beside her. He was dressed in white, the way all lickits were, his head covered with a hood, and his face in shadow. He smelled as though he hadn't had a bath for a while. Tansy moved away slightly. Then he said, in a gruff sort of voice that sounded as though it were disguised, "I know where Betony's gone."

Tansy froze. Sinistroms could take lickit form; the smell didn't bode well. Lickits could smell of burnt toffee, or moldy flour, or even rotten eggs -- but they did wash.

The lickit glanced around. "We can't talk here," he said. "Let's go outside."

Tansy shook her head.

"Come outside, and let me talk to you properly."
