Here's an example of an oral language activity that works at all grade levels and in all subjects. Students who are more proficient readers can use index cards with a key vocabulary word written on each card, while less capable readers can use picture word cards. Give 5–10 cards to each student and put them in pairs. Students then explain each word to their partners without saying it, trying to get them to guess the words. For example:

Student A: It's a roundish red fruit.

Student B: Apple?

Student A: No, it's small and has seeds on the outside.

Student B: Strawberry?

Student A: Right!
