Chapter Ten

Ryder

I know it’s a stupid idea, even as I’m doing it. But I can’t help myself.

Serena stirs as I shake her awake. “Ryder?” she sits up, looking alarmed. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, don’t worry, I just want to show you something,” I tell her, keeping my voice low to avoid waking Gaz and Owen.

She looks puzzled, but she throws aside the covers. She’s wearing nothing but a tank top and a tiny pair of pajama shorts, and I have to tear my eyes away. I’ve been trying to stay away from her, but it’s getting harder and harder all the time.

I’m drawn to her, even as I’ve tried to keep my distance. She’s like a siren, luring me in with her beauty and that enchanting voice, but I’m trying to keep my ship on course instead of crashing into the rocks.

But this morning, I’ve thrown caution to the wind. Once she’s dressed, I lead her outside. The sun isn’t even up yet, but she follows me through the streets of Paris without asking questions. I’m not sure if it’s curiosity or trust, but whatever leads her to follow me is endearing.

Finally, we reach the place I’m after, and I finally stop. Serena glances around, still a little bleary-eyed from sleep. “What are we doing here?” she asks.

I point. “Look.”

She follows my finger and her jaw drops. “Oh, my God,” she breathes.

The sun is just beginning to peek over the horizon, but that isn’t what’s taking her breath away. The place I’ve brought her to is the perfect place to watch the sun rise directly behind the Eiffel Tower.

“It’s beautiful,” she murmurs.

We’d arrived the night before, and she’d gotten to see the tower all lit up, but it’s a different experience in the daytime.

But I can barely pay attention to it. All I can look at is her. The pure wonder in her expression.

It made me remember the last time I’d come here. I’d tried to get Brooke to come see it with me, but she’d brushed me off, so I’d sat here alone. I didn’t need someone else with me to be able to appreciate the beauty, but now, sharing it with Serena, I realize that sharing it with someone else is something beautiful in and of itself.

And I realize that I want to share more with her, and that scares me.

I keep seeing the way Gaz and Owen look at her, and every time, the jealousy that runs through me is overwhelming. The idea of one of them laying claim to her infuriates me, but I know I have no right.

They both deserve to be happy, but I can’t stomach the thought of standing on the sidelines watching her with one of them. Or, even worse, both of them. I know they’ve shared a girl or two, and who knows? Stranger things have happened. Our last tour, we co-headlined with a band who were all dating the same girl.

I’d actually talked to one of the guys about it at one point, a guy named Jay.
