POTTY PROBLEMS

Screams when changing training pants

Won’t tell you when she needs to go potty

Has many toileting accidents

Doesn’t care if underwear is wet

Won’t take time out to go potty

Hides when having a bowel movement

Won’t use potty except at home

Has accidents at preschool or day care

Toilet training is one of the first major battles of wills between parents and young children. The war breaks out when parents ask their independence-loving offspring to give up doing something that has been natural for them to do. Instead, parents want their children to begin doing something that is new, takes away playtime, and is often undesirable.

To most children, what is desirable about toilet training is pleasing their parents. So foster the least accident-prone toilet training possible by putting more attention on what you want to teach your child to do (keep his pants dry, go potty in the potty) than not do (go potty in his pants). Help your child feel proud of himself while you lessen the likelihood that he will have an accident just to get your attention and reaction. For more tips on toilet training, see “Toilet Training” on the Healthy Children website (healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/toddler/toilet-training/Pages/default.aspx).

NOTE: If your child is having continuous toilet-training accidents after the age of four, consult your child’s health care provider. She will check to make sure that your child is physically okay and help you understand what might be causing him to have accidents.

Bed-wetting is not related to toilet training but to a pattern of deep sleep. Many children wet the bed occasionally, but it is not considered bed-wetting until after age six. If your child is six or older, and has three or more wet nights each week, ask your child’s health care provider to help you understand what might be the cause and how to treat it.
