At Monash University, the two possible fossil fragments found in the Helby Beds were examined at length. We considered a number of possibilities. Were they water-worn rock pebbles? If so, there were two odd things about them. First, on both specimens, one smooth surface was a partial cylinder. This smooth surface was truncated by a smooth flat surface. Such a combination is what might be expected in a fragment of bone, but it is unlikely in a water-worn rock pebble. Second, on both specimens there was a very rough surface opposite the smooth cylindrical surface, as if the spongelike texture inside of a bone had been exposed by breakage. Although pebbles with rough, broken surfaces do exist, they are rare in fine-grained sandstones. In this case, these were the only two objects discovered that had this odd combination of smooth and rough surfaces. This pattern would be more common in a bone fragment than in an ordinary rock pebble, and there were millions of the latter in these sediments.
