Ceratosaurus

(Seh-rat-oh-soar-us)

With a row of hard, bony protrusions sticking out of its back, Ceratosaurus is one of the only theropods known to have armor.

Dinosaur Group: Ceratosaur

Meaning of Name: “Horned lizard”

Maximum Size: 20 feet long

Lived: 155–150 million years ago (Jurassic Period)

Diet: Meat

Discovered: 1884, by Othniel Charles Marsh

Locations in North America: CO, UT

Ceratosaurus was similar in appearance to Allosaurus but had a bigger head in respect to its body size. One would think that an animal with a name like “horned lizard” would be pretty fearsome-looking, but its “horn” was really no big deal, certainly nothing like the horns of Triceratops or Styracosaurus. It’s more like a “hornlet” than anything rhino-like. Scientists speculate that the horn was more for display than defense. But, lest you think Ceratosaurus was a wimp, if you saw it and its razor-sharp teeth, you’d definitely want to run the other way.
