Applying the “Hype Cycle” model that depicts the level of expectations over time to the MOOC phenomenon (c.f. Bozkurt, Keskin, & de Waard, 2016), one can argue that after the first years of the “technology trigger” phase, the MOOC hype achieved its “peak of inflated expectations” by the end of 2012, when the New York Times called out “The Year of the MOOC” (Pappano, 2012). After that, interest has fallen, down to a “trough of disillusionment” somewhere around 2013/2014. Since then, the MOOC phenomenon has gained momentum again, with a research-based grounding and a more realistic perspective on feasible use cases. These include competency-based education, adaptive learning, a range of new service and certification models, as well as digital workplace learning in corporate training settings.
