The tradition of the community cookbook is long and rich, especially in the US, though the Women’s Institute has made a fair contribution too, and the spiral-bound Northumberland Federation of Women’s Institutes Cook Book (circa 1950) combines a host of fascinations from Advocat to Yule Cake. Bobby Baker herself contributed a limited edition print entitled Displaying the Sunday Dinner to SPACE Cooks, a community cookbook produced to raise funds for SPACE Studios in 2002. In this glorious photograph, Baker has one foot in an apple pie, the other in a dish of custard, a belt of carrots, a beef bikini top, a roast potato necklace with matching earrings, and a cabbage leaf headdress. The artwork’s list of materials read as a recipe: ‘roast beef, roast potatoes, carrots, savoy cabbage, apple pie and baked custard.’10 Similarly, the 110 contributing artists listed at the back of the book are the human ingredients within the SPACE community. The recipe is a powerful metaphor for the potential alchemy at play in these new exchanges and unions facilitated by food.
